Fairville Labs' Stories

The nine Fairville labs are linked to citizen-led initiatives by local groups partnering with the project. The Fairville labs are established in eight European and African cities: Berlin (Germany), Brussels (Belgium), Calarasi (Romania), Dakar (Senegal), Giza (Egypt), London (UK), Marseille (France) and West Attica (Greece).

They have co-created an one online story map, by Fairville Lab. The dedicated homepage with all stories is intended to be updated as the project progresses, particularly with the collective mapping task and the co-production of proposals.

For each Fairville Lab two elements had to be produced: (1) an introduction text, presenting the Lab, the challenges encountered, main objectives, project partners, key stages, … (2) the story of the Lab.

The narratives created by the Labs could concern the whole Lab process with different steps (chronology) and/or specific aspects (thematics, places, communities…). The choice of medium for sharing this story was left free: photos and text published on the Fairville blog, annotated pictures to share online, interactive maps, graphic designed timelines, graphic facilitation board or sketchnotes, posters, comic strips, podcasts, video interviews, diagrams…

Facing inequalities and democratic challenges through co-production in cities. Fairville is a RIA in the Cluster 2 – Democracy of Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. Fairville intends to address embedded urban inequalities and the challenge this poses to democracy in large cities and urban regions. It will do so by intervening in low-income neighbourhoods that face a growing distance to the institutions and processes of representative democracy. Fairville reimagines the long-term impact of various inequalities on democratic participation, and will use knowledge co-production and participative democracy as strategies of spatial justice to address urban inequalities affecting cities in Europe, and two other mirror cases in Africa. 8 pilot cases (Fairville Labs), implemented in low- income urban areas, will be launched worldwide to demonstrate the capacity of co-production to tackle inequalities and reduce democratic gaps. Partners: CNRS, UP8, UREG, ULB, AMU, APPUII, commonspace, EGEB, FRONTAL, K&I, NSCE, UrbaSEN, ICLEI EURO, IXELLES, CVPT, RE-ATTICA, UCL, Just Space
